NVivo 9 training event

3-4 October 11

No 2 Wellington Place, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 4AP

Course Overview
This two-day workshop will provide you with a thorough introduction of the main features of NVivo 9 using a sample data. You will learn how to: efficiently and effectively manage, code and analyse structured, semi-structured, unstructured interview data including multimedia data sources, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, IBM SPSS statistics and Endnote.

You will structure your thematic node system, supported by your chosen methodology; setup demographic attributes about the respondents to assist profiling themes; use queries to seek answers to research questions as well as formulate new questions and explore new ideas. You will use the modeling facility to capture the big picture of your project or display different views or show relationships. You will export models to use in PowerPoint presentations. You will explore the graphing facility to visualize two or three dimensional charts of results. You will also use the new ‘connection maps’ to easily explore connections between project items.

You will be shown how to use NVivo 9’s new ‘extract’ feature to extract and export specific reports or results into other applications. You will be shown how to setup a team project involving many researchers in different geographical locations.

Who is the Course Aimed At?
This course is designed for the complete beginner as well as those who have used previous versions of the software: NVivo 8, NVivo 7, N6, and NVivo 2.

You are encouraged to bring your own data, if you have any, at least a transcript of one interview in Word format. We will provide data if you have no data. We provide laptops for all participants so you need not bring your own, however if you prefer to work on your own laptop, then you are welcome to bring your own with NVivo pre-installed. If you have not yet acquired your own NVivo 9 license, you could download a FREE 30day trial copy from http://www.qsrinternational.com/#tab_you.

Each participant is given a tutor time to receive feedback on their node structure, coding, attributes and queries. Other areas will be directed by the needs of participants. The maximum class size is 9.

Cost
The two days course cost for academic delegate is £323.26 and £371.75 for commercial delegate. Participants receive a comprehensive training guide, after training support, lunches and refreshments for the duration of the 2 days.

Recognition for Learning
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the course.

Booking
Request booking by sending email to training@datasolutionservices.co.uk or download booking form from the website http://www.datasolutionservices.co.uk/uploads/files/booking_request_for_nvivo_public_event.doc

Snap! Calling All Researchers! Using a single inspiring photographic image and short description can you illustrate your research to the general public? Can that image show how your research contributes to a sustainable future, how it benefits society, or how your research makes a difference?

We invite the research community at The University of Manchester to take part in the Images of Research Photography Competition. The theme of this year’s competition is Visions of Sustainability and you can enter your image in one of the following categories: People, Environment, or Culture. The image could be anything that captures attention but must be related to your research.
The Public Will Decide! In the lead up to the Manchester Science Festival in October, shortlisted entries will be exhibited at the John Rylands Library Deansgate and online. The general public will be invited to vote for the best image and associated abstract.

First prize: £250 Amazon vouchers | Runners up per category: £100 Amazon vouchers | Highly commended: £50 high street vouchers

Who Can Enter? Open to academics, research fellows, postdoctoral research associates, postgraduate research students and research technical support staff including experimental officers across all disciplines at The University of Manchester.

Submission Details: Submissions close 19 September 2011, 12pm (BST). One submission per entrant. So get snapping, we look forward to seeing the wonder of your research. Find out how to enter and see the full terms and conditions at:

‘Every researcher counts: equality and diversity in researcher careers in HEIs conference’

Friday 26 August 2011 at the University of Stirling

This one-day conference will support pro-vice-chancellors (or equivalent senior staff), researcher developers and equality and diversity specialists to improve institutional approaches to equality and diversity for recruiting, managing and developing research staff.

The purpose of this event is to open debate around the strategic importance of equality and diversity policy and practice for researchers, embedded in the Scottish research environment and to learn more about the Every Researcher Counts project and its related resources. Participants will have the opportunity to explore strategic approaches to equality and diversity for researchers; what would a successful strategy look like and how would it be delivered so that ‘every researcher counts’?

Speakers at the conference include:

Professor Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland

Professor Paul Hagan, Director of Research and Innovation, Scottish Funding Council

The event is for participants who can speak on behalf of their institution in relation to:

institutional strategies for embedding equality and diversity and the Concordat principles within institutional practice

institutional measures of success and various reporting mechanisms.

This event is part of the broader ‘Every researcher counts’ project commissioned and funded by HEFCE with support from SFC, HEFCW and DEL(NI) and delivered by Vitae (www.vitae.ac.uk/everyresearchercounts).

Visit the ‘Every researcher counts’ event page for more information and to book your free of charge place: http://www.vitae.ac.uk/policy-practice/355881-411801/Every-Researcher-Counts—University-of-Stirling.html#pageInfo
